Would we really need hover cars?

We all know the clichéd idea that in the future we will all have a car with no wheels; it will float in the air!

However, how practical would this be?
Would we actually need this function?
Wouldn't this just be a complete waste of energy / time / money?

all business people know: to make a successful product you need to offer something that fixes a problem that people have in their everyday lives. Would a Hovercar do this?
