Would two weeks be enough to hitchhike/backpack your way from Germany to Ireland?

I'm writing a novel, and my MC has to get from Berlin to Kilkenny. He'll be hitchhiking, backpacking, biking and stuff, but with enough time to see the sights. How much time would it take?
 
I don't know about hitchhikers on ferries (such as, do people take hitchhikers and do border authorities do anything to discourage that or exclude hitchhikers), and there would be two long ferry trips involved. Even aside from the ferries, two weeks seems very short.
