Would this have been a good story idea? "Sequel to Catcher in the Rye"?

In my freshman year of high school, I fell in love with Catcher in the Rye. I was also a fan of the whole "Outsiders" (Greasers, leather jackets, 50's etc.)

So in the story, Holden finally gets out of the hospital and he's in the 50's (The book came out in 45), and he goes to a bar and he finds Maurice (Read the first one to find out who Maurice is) he is almost killed by him until the greasers come in and help him. He kills maurice by slamming his head into the jukebox until he breaks it.

Then, Holden becomes a member of the greasers, and he's introduced to the gang. He tells them his whole story from the 1st one, then he goes to a gang war with them, and they win, but Holden gets into trouble with them because he gave some information to the preppy's and then he gets killed by the head of the Greasers.

I quit writing this, but would this have been good anyway?

The problem is that Catcher in the Rye is such an iconic book: every novel about teenage angst seems to derive from it (Same goes with Outsiders; these books along with others practically defined Young Adult Fiction). However, when I first read your question, I thought the first paragraph was the beginning of your story. Now THAT is an interesting idea: a modern-day teenager reads Catcher in the Rye...what happens next?
