would this be a good bike to learn on?

i'm 14 and want to get a dirt bike and am looking at a 1971 honda cl 175 for a starting bike i was wondering if it would be any good on trails and would people laugh because it looks old and stuff?

ok on and off road i'm turning 15 in a few days and i might be able to fix it up to ride when i'm 16 but i don't know if it would look weird for a kid my age to be riding somthing like that i think i can get after market parts though
 
i think it would be a very good bike to learn on. you also would find a smaller bike is easier to get you riders permit with. most states require that you make several manuevers that a hard to do on a large bike
 
That's a good bike but you said DIRT bike. The bike in the picture is a combination of dirt and street. It is a compromise. If you want to learn to ride off road you should get one made especially for that purpose. The handling and weight bias is different. Make sure you can touch the ground with BOTH feet, even tippy toe counts. There were some great bikes back in the 1970's. The older 4 stroke bikes tended to be a little top heavy for off road. Take a look at Suzuki 2 stroke TS models or Yamaha DT enduro models.
