Would SHARP cell phones work in North America?

I recently got a Sharp 6228C from China (it's not a fake). When I got back to Canada and put my SIM card in, it wouldn't allow me to make calls (only emergency calls were allowed). There were full signal bars and even "FIDO" was shown on the screen.

Would I have to unlock it? Or...is it just not compatible with the network in Canada?

I'm panicking ): Thanks in advance!
