Would me forming a political opinion just be an intellectual exercise?

Sometimes my friends engage in a political conversation (UK) and I feel a little left out because I don't know think I know enough to do much but echo anything other than sweeping generalisations. Would it actually be worth me knowing though? Statistically, I am an upper middle class 21 year old white male who makes a living as a freelance programmer. I've lived a sheltered upbringing with virtually no hard ships whatsoever so I could learn till my heart's content and still have an opinion that carries little weight to it. I have opted out of such conversations before by just saying 'I don't know enough to make a comment' and have been called 'undereducated' and 'ignorant' for doing so.
Surely it's actually wiser to invest time in things which give a return to you though? Would all the time that I would need to spend just reading give me anything other than an opinion? What can I as an individual do with detailed knowledge of what the leaders of my country are doing?
