Would it be cheaper to purchase my own car or use a taxi?

If I get my own car, I'll be paying for gas, insurance, and repairs. If I take a taxi, I'd be paying the high fares. I'd take the bus but it only runs once an hour. How much money would using a taxi cost? Do they do it by the mile? Time? What's the price rate for Manatee county? Sources?
