Would I need to unlock a Vodafone phone for my Talkmobile sim?

I have a talkmobile sim card and was thinking about buying a Vodafone phone from a friend, I was wondering if I would need to unlock the phone or not? I've had phones unlocked before and it's cost about ?15 so its not a big deal, but would just like to know whether or not it would be necessary.
I don't have the phone yet, will probably get it sometime next week, was just wondering about it just now. Know any cheaper methods then?
