Would an updated mobile phone give me better coverage?

To make a call/send text from my T-mobile phone in the UK I have to go upstairs to the bathroom, or into the garden. If I don't do that, the phone says "network not available" or "emergency only. My phone is about four years old. If I bought an updated phone, would I get better coverage, or would the new (expensive) phone be no better in this respect?
I am on the T-Mobile network, in the UK. Friends with phones using other networks don't have any problems.

Perhaps T-mobile is not your friend in the UK. What providers do your friends have? What types of phones they carry? When in Rome do as the Romans do.
