Would an external graphics card boost my gaming performance?

There are some external graphics cards that are intended for computers that aren't capable of multiple monitors. If I were to use this with my already very capable laptop, would I get improved graphics performance, since the external graphics would handle the monitor output, and so my internal card would only need to render the 3d game graphics. It makes sense to me, but I could certainly be wrong, since i've never heard of anyone doing this before.

No, those are just cheap display adapters, and they will actually decrease the performance. They make the processor do more work to display the graphics. The device it self doesn't offload the graphics work, it only acts as a converter. In fact, these struggle to play HD videos, and they noticably slow down computers. If you need powerful graphics, your best off with a desktop.
