to communicate effectively? Won't say how I know her, but I've suggested she needs help. Professional help. Sorry for the length of the post.
She has terribly low self esteem and is extremely shy. She was at a restaurant and needed a knife, so she went to get one. She came back and said she couldn't find one, so someone suggested she try the salad bar or something. She came back a few minutes later still knife-less. One of the others went and came back in like 20 seconds with a knife. The girl explained that she didn't want to bother any of the employees by asking for help because they looked busy. (Just her choice of words says a lot, she honestly feels like she would be a "bother" by asking an employee a question.)
So yeah, her self esteem is non-existent. Because she has low self esteem, she never really put herself out there. She's never really experienced meeting people, or been in many social situations. This has led to her being visibly uncomfortable in public situations or when meeting people.
Because of that, she has terrible social skills and lacks the ability to communicate. Here's an example (I wish I was making this up). She went away to college, and for an entire semester living in the dorms, she didn't make a single friend. She often times gets frustrated when talking to people because she feels like they're not listening, when in fact she's the one who isn't getting the point across.
Again, excuse the length, but I want whoever reads and responds to have an idea of how bad the situation is.
None of us know how to help her, and I think therapy or something is the only thing that could help her get over her anxieties and develop her social skills. Has anyone ever dealt with someone in a similar situation? Any experience in dealing with therapists? If so, how much do they cost?
