would a motocross bike bog down if it needed coolant?

My crosser nearly blew up earlier, it completely bogged down and didn't wanna go any further, then starting squeeling, it was bogging down for about half hour before, wouldn't go through the power bands properly.. then i nearly got home and had to stop, i was going about 5 miles an hour in 3rd gear, where its supposed to be rapid... do you think the problem was that there was no coolant in it... would it do that if it needed coolant???? completely bog down and not go through powerbands
