Would a lawyer do this? If not, then what job would that be?

In the book I am writing, a man is a lawyer and is on the case of a man named Raymen LaTerro who is in jail for abusing his girlfriend, and is showing remorse and trying to get out of jail. A girl who knows the man (the lawyer) tells him to not let Raymen out of jail because it was her mom he abused, and it was her that sent him to jail.
Would that be the case of a lawyer, if not, then what would be his job?
If a man was trying to get out of jail, would that be the job of a lawyer?
