...serve me? I got a call from 657-859-4562 from a man claiming to be a lawyer. First he talked to my dad because I wasn't home. He gave my dad a case number to call back with and said that I was going to be served papers if I didn't call back.
So the next day I called and gave the man my case # and he told me that I have an unpaid debt with HSBC, which is correct, and he said that he was working with the local county Sheriff to serve me papers if I didn't pay voluntarily. He knew my address and social security number and said that this was the only debt in my credit history.
First he told me I owed $1500 with legal fees and everything, but that I had different payment options depending on my financial situation. First he said I could make one payment of $900 to clear the debt. I told him that I don't have a job, but that I will receive my tax refund of $932 next week. He then said that he didn't want to take all of my income, so he asked me to give him $532 on February 16th. I reluctantly agreed, but if I go through with this payment, I won't have enough to pay my phone bill (already past due) or fix my car. I'm just unsure whether he's really a lawyer or just a debt collector using scare tactics...Help???
The case # he gave me is 84101 if that helps. I live in Plainfield (Hendricks County) Indiana.
