i was thinking about getting a motorcycle but nothing big just to get around and have good mpg, would the 250 ninja be good or something else. i am short around 5'5" and weigh about 150 pounds.

125-250cc bikes are ideal for novice riders, just to get the feel and power is essential before ya could move on to a 600-1000cc super bike...ride safe ride on..

crotch rokets arent the best for a begginer, but if your set on that type of bike, its not a bad one to learn on.

Thats the perfect bike for you. The new 08's have awesome styling. This bike doesn't have a lot of power so it would be a great bike to start and learn beginner motorcycle skills and it will get awesome gas mileage.

Sincerely all is about taste.
Try a doble pourpose bike. Ask to a dealer to try one. They are cheaper, comfortable, easy to drive, and low mantainance & repairs. Just pocket money.
This "Trail bikes" (the ones with mirrors and directional lights) are very friendly with the beginners, because you don't need to gear plenty of times. And they use to have very comfortable place for your passenger. Driving a sports bike is difficult.
By the way, with this saving, invest in a good helmet, gloves, a bike jacket, and a pair of boots.
Get a good driving school, or at least ask your friends to give you some advice and tips.
Welcome!
