I don't currently have my motorcycle and in the process of talking my mom into it( she opposes it ), but I don't have much longer til i can go get it on my own without her signature. But I need help deciding which bike would be a good first bike. All answers appreciated. Thanks

Oh man,.... you are a glutton for punishment aren't you? This is the one place that all the Harley haters will come out with their mouths foaming to get the chance to indoctrinate a new rider. That being said: If you are an average sized guy the 883 iron or otherwise is a fine choice for a first bike,...but hey, any sportster is an acquired taste. Its not a good choice for a 6'5" 285 lb football player. Everyone I know that has a 883 loves it. Its quick and nimble in town and it is up to the task on any highway. its NOT an underpowered POS. -And its not a drag bike: its even tempered. The expert on this forum that actually rides an 883 is an Australian guy that, from what I gather can really put that thing to the test in the Australian landscape... he apparently gets good reliable service out of it. Nobody can refute the facts... your sportster will still be running when the imports are in the crusher. I admit I am not impartial,,, I'm HD all the way.
But what do I know, right? I've only been at this a couple of days.

(edit) Another poster recommended a 1200 sporty. Nothing wrong with that logic,... its a great bike. Very comfortable and gutsy. When you're ready to move up, thats a great place to land.

For a first motorcycle, the 883 is not bad at all. You will find after a short while, that you want more. Go ahead and get the larger sportster. I went directly to a Honda VTX1300 after having been off any bike for about 30 years. You shouldn't have a problem.
Good luck, and safe riding.

Spend the extra money and get the 1200. You will quickly outgrow the 883 and will want another within the first six months.

Im going to educate you so you dont sound like a moron, the 883 is NOT an IRON 883! Its just an evo 883.The Iron sportster was a 900 c.c. and later a 1,000 C.C. bike.It had cast iron heads and barrels hence the name IRON SPORTSTER. And my old 76 ironhead will flat out smoke any New sporty light to light! Now as far as your question goes, no stay away from the 883 you will outgrow it in a couple of months. It has NO POWER for its size. Get a 1200 sporty if your gonna get a sporty at all.
