Would a few fish survive a week and half without food?

I am going away to Florida for a week and a half, and I don't think I can get anybody to feed my fish. I've heard of a food that will dissolve in water or something like that, that you can feed to your fish while you're away. Would this work?

Also, I put all my brother's fish he didn't want into my tank, and now I have an empty tank (my brother's old one). Should I risk buying a new fish and having him die, or should I not buy a new fish, and risk having the bacteria for biofiltration die?

CIARAN D : Dude, I am a responsible owner. I'm not the kind of idiot that puts ten goldfish in a 10 gallon tank. I try to keep the fish happy. Having to go on vacation doesn't mean you're a bad owner. I would be a abd owner if, I just said "Screw it, I don't care, they're just fish"

THese poor animals are captive, so rely totally on you for their wellbeing. If you can't be a responsible owner, do NOT be an owner!!!!!!
 
Just feed them normally before you go.. fish are fine up to 2 weeks without food, and overfeeding or using vacation food will just muck the water up and is more likely to kill him. You'd probably have to withhold food for about a month for them to start dying.

They will be really hungry when you get back... but they should be alive...
 
Answer to first question: I don't have any experience with automatic fish feeders but i just saw today at Petco in the fish food isle they have an automatic fish feeder so while you're on vacation they can be fed. I'm not sure how it works or if they work properly but it's something to look into. Fish would not be able to live a week in a half without food, by then most would be dead of starvation.

Answer to second question: I would buy some cheap fish for the tank because if the bacteria dies you will have to cycle the whole tank over again and it is a lot of work. If they die, then you can simply replace. Cycling is a long process....but that's just in my opinion.
 
They have food for fish they sell when you go on vacation.I buy it all the time when I go for vacation,And I leave like for 2 weeks.I would put 2 if you have alot of fish.Its like a shell and it dissolved in the water.Good luck! Oh and I wouldn't buy a new fish til you get back from vacation.
