would a DS game work on a DSI Console?

Hi I bought a game yesterday for the ds and cant seem to get it to work was wondering if I had bought the wrong game as I have the DSI and the game says DS , my Granddaughter said that her ds games work on my DSI every time i put the game in it tells me that there is an error and i don't no how to fix this.
