would buying a sucker (bottom feeder) fish help getting rid of that brown grime (Diatoms)?

and are there any freshwater ones for my freshwater tank?

Try buying otocinculus catfish. They stay much smaller than plecos (sucker fish) and they do a better job on algae. All the plecos I have had do not clean algae at all. But the otos do a great job on all kinds of algae. However buy at least 2 or 3 otos because they like to be in groups. They are cheap, you can find them at petsmart for a couple of dollars.
