Would a 22" flat screen tv be adequate for a lounge?

At the moment I just have a traditional 20" square screen tv. I wanted to upgrade to a widescreen as most of the programmes and dvds are in widescreen format.

I looked at some of the ordinary wide screen tvs but they seem to be very bulky at the back, although now you can get a really big size one of those types very cheap.

Would a 22" seem a lot smaller than the one I have now because of widescreen, and what size is best for a lounge? It's not a really large lounge I have. Some of the bigger tvs such as 32" and 40" are very expensive though.
I'm not really bothered about a massive screen anyway but want one that's comfortable to view. Not one that's going to look like a portable tv. I was thinking 22" or 26"

The answer is get the biggest and best you can afford, as long as your distance for viewing is 3 mtrs or more ,it,s not make any difference to viewing , only the quality of the tv is important. Have the tv at the eye level when seated, the trend now is to have them wall mounted just below the cieling, which is fine for cinemas becuse you have the right seating for that. But sitting on your soffa /chair looking up at it , not cool.Bad bad for posture /neck .

We had a 32" at the end of our lounge, viewing distance about 11'. Cost 1300 years ago.
We did a makeover in the room and the TV was moved to the side wall, we went for a 42" plasma with viewing distance 8' which 6 years ago was a huge jump and huge price of £4000!.
It appeared HUGE at the time but you soon get used to it!
We bought our son a 42" LCD last year. He is on cable so benefited from being able to watch HD straight away. INCREDIBLE quality. Viewing distance about 8' also.
When we replace our TV it will be for a 50" HD.
You can get a 42" for £500 now (our son's was £560 from ALDI supermarkets) and bearing in mind they now last min. 10+ years is very reasonable.
Our friend just bought a 46" - viewing distance about 10'
Go for the biggest you can - it gives an almost cinema effect and you can see so much more detail!

a 22" is going to seem smaller because it will be shorter.

but your best bet is to get a rough measurement of your lounge and go to a store with lot's of TVs. Stand about the distance your seating is in your lounge and decide.

the other thing to keep in mind is the angle of viewing. if you room is wide be sure to consider the maximum viewing angle (the seats farthest from the center of the screen) and check out the tvs from that angle too. Some have a much wider viewing angle than others.
