Worth it to be occasional driver insured in Canada if you don't use the car much?

I've been told that your insurance skyrockets if you don't stay insured for auto every year. Is this true or false?

Also, If I only use it like once a week and end up paying insurance of $500 a year (driving 2003 honda cr-v lx) is it worth it?
