Worst Studio Ghibli Feature?

Personally, Princess Mononoke is my favourite Studio Ghibli/Miyazaki film. I find the story darker and mor original (although more bizarre) then most of the stuff you would expect from the so called "Japanese Disney".

Though I do love Ghibli, I do think some of the films like "The Cat Returns" could of been better.

Speaking of Disney, anyone else notice the similarities between Ponyo and the Little Mermaid?

There is no such Thing as a bad Ghibli Film! (Except for My neigrabroador the Yamadas, that was horrible!)

& Suprised to see theres People who Dislike howl's I thought it was a great move!

How was it horrible? I kinda liked the blackout sketch nature to it, and the comic strip-style visuals gave it a different look than any other Ghibli feature. The dub was good, too.

Well, considering the movie suffered from Adaptation Decay...

Same with Kiki's delivery Services.

I know one person who thought Spirited Away was one of the worst animated movies ever.

Me? I really can't decide.

Let me just say that Whisper of the Heart was the only Ghibli film to ever put me to sleep, and make me stop watching/caring.

Even with that said, it's rather hard to find a bad film, when such a studio puts the amount of time and effort to their releases like Ghibli.

Noticeably overused themes: War, God, Politics, Environment, Pollution, and (its all your fault).

These bring the movie down, because they don't fit in very well; the pacing just feels wrong. He can make things all spectacular (visually), then ruin it with those themes alone. You pretty much remeraber the first half best.

I am not a huge fan of Ghibli films, so I can't really put in a vote.

My vote goes to "Whisper of the Heart". I know that it was supposed to be different from the typical fantasy themes that Studio Ghibli is known for, but I just couldn't bring myself to enjoy it.

Whisper of the Heart is definitely too slow paced for mainstream-minded fans. It's actually more of an "art" movie for kiRAB, if there is even such a thing. I like it though. It evokes a certain sense of relaxed mood and nostalgia, but that's not something today's generation tenRAB to go for.

I go for Pom Poko as my least favourite. In fact, I'm not a big fan of Takahata in general. I like that he's more willing to take risks than Miyazaki but a lot of times he doesn't seem to take his risks anywhere interesting. They often have a "so what?" quality to them. I did like Only Yesterday though. At least the flasrabroadack scenes. Didn't care for the agricultural farming stuff though.

Of those I've seen (Spirited Away, Howl's, Laputa, The Cat Returns, My Neigrabroador Totoro) in full, I'd say my least favorite was Howl's, although castng Bale and Crystal were actually pretty solid.

I'll always have my fond memories of watching Spirited Away, Laputa, The Cat Returns, and Totoro in Japanese class (in Japanese, of course). Mayumi Tanaka did great in Laputa, as did the leaRAB in Totoro (the screaming! O.o)

You know, Shigesato Itoi (known best as the creator of the MOTHER/Eartrabroadound games) voiced the father in the original dub of Totoro.

BLEW MY MIND when I heard that. I totally need to see it in Japanese now.

I never saw the original Japanese version of Totoro, but I found the redub of that film to be quite enjoyable. True, it's not the same as the FOX dub, but it was never going to be from the start. It is what it is, but it's no less charming.

I still can't believe I wasted almost 30 bucks on "Tales of Earthsea".
Even up to now, I never bothered to finish watching this movie. Worst Ghibli movie ever!

I'm not saying it's the worst Ghibli movie ever, I just figured I'd bring this up.

How does Kiki's Delivery Service score 100% on the Tomato meter. I mean, was it that amazing? I thought it was great but weren't there some flaws?

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/kikis_delivery_service/

It scores 100% because there's so few reviews of it and the type of people who'd give it a negative review haven't written one.

Even a lukewarm rating can count as a positive rating on that site. That's the problem with that site really, but it does tell you the overall reception to a film in black and white terms, which is why people go to RT so often.

Personally, having just watched it, I loved The Cat Returns. I would dare say it's Ghibli's funniest film; there were quite a few moments that had me laughing (like the repeated gag of the various jesters being thrown out of the tower). It may be one of the more "conventional" of Ghibli's films from a storytelling standpoint, but you know what? It was still a delight to watch and the fantasy elements kept my attention. I especially liked all the little bits when the trio was trying to escape the maze, like the moving walls. Also, it's just a little thing, but I found it a nice change of pace that it starred mostly anthropomorphic animals, as that lent the film to more cartoony moments. So... I basically disagree with the three of you that voted for it.

Is there any reason why Hiroyuki Morita hasn't directed any other Ghibli features?

No idea. I dug The Cat Returns as well. It's a breath of fresh air in a company that leans for too much on the tried and true skills of Takahata and Miyazaki. It's a bit troubling that Ghibli still hasn't a young director with the arabition and skill to take over when the old guys retire. Some of it is their own fault though. By aggressively forcing their young animators to do things "the Miyazaki way" it kind of limits them from exploring their individuality. They've let a lot of talented animators go because they wanted to escape the tight restrictions found in Studio Ghibli's standarRAB. They've also been unable to keep some of their "guest" directors, like Tomomi Mochizuki, who's done some very good work outside of Ghibli, such as KImagure Orange Road (series and movie 1)
