Worrying Condition - Any Idea?

This concerns a member of my family which makes it all the more distressing, since he refuses to see a doctor, insisting there is nothing wrong.

He is fine and alert during the day but in the evening he sits down to watch TV and falls straight asleep, or sits in a stupor, slurs his words and staggers about. This evening he had a friend round and was perfectly alert and attentive, recounting a past holiday in great detail, but the second the friend had left he sat down and was unresponsive to the point of unconsciousness. He insists there is nothing wrong because he can never remember past around 7 or 8pm from the previous evening. Some background: he is overweight and around 56 years of age, and has no mental difficulties. There is a history of Alzheimers/Dementia in the family but as I said there are absolutely no problems during the day, which makes me doubt that this is the problem - he goes to work and comes home and is perfectly normal. Diabetes has been suggested but since he refuses to see a doctor I thought I'd post this and get perhaps a potential diagnosis to scare him into action, so to speak.

I would appreciate all answers, thank you.

He may be eating a high carbohydrate evening meal which will cause a person to be drowsy. He needs to have his blood sugar checked.

If he is eating a high load of carbs for dinner try giving him a low carb meal (no starches or sweets) and see if he does the same thing.
