Worried about the future of TV Animation

toonami is dead.

Saturday mornings, as we know them, are dead.

Toon disney has shed "toon" from it's name and most of its programming.

Cartoon network will soon no longer be cartoon network.


Is anyone else creeped out by this. IMO, this problem is far larger than just anime shown on TV. It seems almost scary to me how all animation is seemingly being systematically purged from the airwaves.

Very few new cartoon shows, and episodes of returning shows are slated for next year as compared to previous years. Is there any way to save TV animation? I`m really worried about this.
 
I've noticed this too, Scirel.
I sure hope TV animation, and 2D animation makes a comeback overall with the release of The Princess and the Frog. I can only hope.
 
Not really. Animated shows are made all the time. Sure CN may be cutting back on them, but it's not like Nick and Disney are cutting back on them. If CN goes down the tubes, I can take my viewing elsewhere.
 
my answer. In 2-3 years time once the economy has improved then we will see more origional telivised animation & Anime on TV. We must mearly be patiant. remember...good things come to those who wait! (& theres always DVDS!):anime:

....Tim & Eric isn't animated. But thats a great list. Can't wait for the New season of Venture Bros & the premire of the Cleavleand show.:flapjack:

As For Disney, It may not be official, but im still hopeful that will get a english dub of the Stitch series some time this fall or next year.:D:chowder:
 
I'm not worried at all. Seriously.

True, the 24 hour animation channel may be on the decline at the moment, but there's no real evidence anywhere to support the belief that animation as a whole is dying.
 
At the most, the decline of 24 hour animation could possibly mean the return of Saturday Morning Cartoons, so I'm actually hopeful.
 
Toonami's been dead for a while now. For me, Toonami died years before CN pulled the plug on it.

The Saturday mornings that people in their 20's and 30's knew may be gone, but Saturday morning cartoons as a whole are very much alive. ABC Kids, KEWLopolis (soon to become Cookie Jar TV), Qubo, and CW4Kids say howdy-do. Not to mention all of the cable and satellite channels which show cartoons on Saturday morning.

Ah, but both channels are still airing cartoons, aren't they? In fact, they're both planning to start airing additional cartoons in the months to come. Neither channel will ever be completely devoid of animation, and anyway, it's not like CN and Disney XD are the only places to see cartoons. There were cartoons on TV before either of those channels were launched, and there will still be cartoons on TV afterward.


I think you're worried for nothing. Honestly. D Dubbs' extensive list alone should be clear indication that TV animation isn't going anywhere. Cartoons are like pop music: the outlets and names may change every couple of years, but they will always exist in some for or another.

Wow.

But seriously animation is not going to die out. I actually feel sorry for Cartoon Network, sorry, 'CN' because there are probably still people who want to do more cartoons.

I mean, Live Action is having a pretty negative impact on animation and if kids rather see Live Action that's what they're going to see. With all they're doing now, traditional animation may not be around. But that doesn't mean animation is gone.
 
I must confess, I'm a bit worried about the animation industry myself. In general it doesn't seem to be doing very well. The quality in animation is not only declining, but even channels dedicated to animation are barely taking any acknowledgment to its existence.

Perhaps I'm just being negative though. I'd really like to be optimistic that animation will make a comeback once the economy gets back on track.

Anyway, I'm am so not one of those "all modern animations sucks!" people, but I am a bit worried because:

*Chowder and Flapjack are in grave danger of being canceled despite being very well-received.

*Cartoonstitute (which could have been a much-needed shot-in-the-arm to not only CN, but TV animation in general) had its short film count cut from 39 to 13, and with not even 5 full half-hours of material, may never even air (I really hope they release it on DVD somehow, or maybe on digital download).

*The only really big shows Nick has are SpongeBob and Oddparents, which in most people's opinions (including mine, I guess) are way past their prime (there are some good drawings in SpongeBob and I'm looking forward to upcoming SpongeBob documentary). I should also add that I not really looking forward to the Kung Fu Panda and Monsters vs. Aliens series (Jeffrey Katzenberg is reminding me more and more of his ex-mentor Michael Eisner during the Disney "cheapquel" days), and I'm disappointed that Random Cartoons got treated the way it did.

*The only show that Walt Disney Television Animation is currently producing that really interests me is Phineas and Ferb. A decent show, but I'd like to see a bit more variety.

*The future of Spectacular Spider-Man is uncertain.

That said, I am looking forward to Sym-Biotic Teen (with Genndy in charge, it's nigh-inevitable to be worth watching), Adventure Time (mostly with Jerry Beck hyping it on Cartoon Brew, plus I dig Frederator), and that Garfield thing (just to see if it's reasonably entertaining or not) on Cartoon Network, and eagerly await the return of Futurama on Comedy Central.
 
Well Chowder's ratings have been falling for a while now. I thought that Flapjack was being renewed.


Don't forget Back to the Barnyard and Penguins of Madagascar.
 
I've been worried about animation altogether since Toonami was taken off due to those scumbags at CN :mad:. Comedy Central takes off Drawn Together{Which I admit its a pretty screwed up cartoon but however in my opinion better than looking at new episodes of the simpsons.}


I pretty much gave up on Cartoonnetwork a long time ago but I feel sorry for the people who still watch the channel today. Not that I don't mind any of the new shows or anything but I just don't like what they air. I now hear that people who used to work at CN have left to do freelance work, work at warner bros., or just working with someone for a comeback. I just hope adult animation comes back with 9 and El Superbeasto. So you can tell that I am half and half about this, and pretty much companies are making poor choices. CN for one exmaple.
