Working on a Honda CM 185. Starts Hard and won't idle.?

The bike is a '79 Honda CM 185, with a kick and electric start.

We've been through everything we can think of trying to get this bike to run. It runs great once you get it started and get it up in the high end, however it will not idle and is really hard to start. We've been through the carb with a fine tooth comb. We adjusted the valve's to factory spec. The air filter and element is oiled and oil has been changed. We ran a timing check on it as well. All the gaps have been adjusted too.

What else can it be? How much is the bike affected by it's electrical systems? Could all of this be because of a bad wire/connection?

No the carburetor has the problem. Check the jet and idle adjustment screw. If the prob still remains check the choke. If the choke is down always engine gets a poor air mixture. Fix a new plug start the bike and see the colour. If the plug gets black that means you'r tuning is bad. Less air is the prob. If the plug gets white that means less air. If the plug is brown then you'r tuning is correct and carb works well.
