Not sure what you mean by too much. Lift maybe? The 555 seems to be a great fit in the 96. I was a little curious if the additional lift was going to incur a penalty at the lower rpms, but certainly doesn't.
The 204 is a good choice for a stock 96. I put them in my 103, along with high ratio rockers, which gives the cams a .540 lift, adds a couple degrees duration and speeds up the ramps.
Either way, you'd probably be happy with the performance. The 204s have 8* advance ground in, and might hit a little bit earlier than the 555s, and lose a little bit on the other end. With the high ratio rockers, I'd expect the performance of the 204s to be pretty close to the 555s. Run at stock lift, they are similar to the Woods 6.
The performance of the 204s is weighted towards the middle. They don't hit quite as early as the 255s, but carry a little longer. There is no torque penalty at low rpms compared to stock cams. They also have a pleasant idle lope.
