Woke up and my big toe nail part of it is dark purple

i suppose is the skin under the nail. But anyways,

this is weird. I was totally clear yesterday and now it's purple . What can this be? i was not stomped, didn't fall, nothing!
 
Bruising under the nail can be caused from things you are not aware doing (just a light bump of your foot against something), or if you wear steel toed shoes or shoes with toes that crimp your toes.

My husband is always coming up with bruises under his toe nails (he wears steel toed boots) that he does not remember doing anything to get.

If it does not go away or continues to happen, see a doctor.

my guess is also the shoes being the cause but I will take it a step further and say that more than just a steel toe shoe can cause this. if the shoe is too tight and with every step you take it can be pressing right on the nail thus causing the discoloration. change the shoes see if the problem goes away with time.
