WM phone

I am currently in China looking to get a WM phone that I can bring back to the US. Aside from the basic features that WM offers, the main applications that I intend on running are as follows:
1) Plecodict - Chinese/English dictionary
2) Skype

I was originally looking at phones with the Samsung 400mhz processor like what is equivalent to the Cingluar 8525 but I feel that this is much to expensive to pruchase without a contract. I then began looking at the Dopod 818pro and M700 which seem like good phones but both phones run the TIOmap processor which seems to be unstable when running Skype.

I was originally looking at phones with HSDPA like the Dopod D810 but once again, it's too expensive for me to purchase.

Thanks for you help!

Running SKYPE on a cell phone is iffy at best. It doesn't have the connection quality and bandwidth available to support good voice quality calls.

Also, be careful when getting a non US branded phone to operate on the US networks. If you are on Verizon, they use CDMA and will generally allow only a Verizon Branded phone on their network. If you insist, you should get a quad band GSM phone and unlock it, since it has the best chance of operating on either the Cingular or T-Mobile network. You also need to make sure the Chinese version of 3 G and EDGE (if they have it) is compatible with the US networks.

In addition, if you need tech support for such a phone, you probably will not be able to get it here in the US, nor will any carriers be able to help you set it up.

Oh...I'll probably sign up with Cingular when I get back to the US. Do you know the specifics that I should look for when purchasing a phone in order for it to work with Cingular (ie bandwidth...)?

It really depends on where in the US you will live, work, play, travel, etc. Cingular uses GSM technology. Should be quad band: 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 MHz. US EDGE capable at the least.

Ya, all the phones I'm looking at have these specs so should be no problem. But if I buy a phone in China, are they all considered "unlocked" or will I have to have someone unlock the phone so I can use it in the US.
