WM Family Mobile w/ iPhones or Virgin Mobile Intercept (Low cost plan questions)

I abandoned AT&T after 5 years of service due to their ridiculously high costs. My wife and I have an iPhone 3G and 3GS and their cheapest plan was $165 after taxes and fees. While we used a fair amount of data in the past, more recently we just haven't been using that much on the road. At home and work we have access to WiFi.

We took our iPhones over to a T-Mobile pay as you go plan (no data and not a lot of minutes/text) and while we love only spending $30 - 40 a month for service, there are times when we wish we had more minutes, text and the occasional data access.

I have been looking for a better plan, but for a reasonable cost plan for talk/text/data it seems you have to sacrifice coverage. See Simple Mobile's or Air Voice's coverage maps. And since I'm in Kansas, coverage is a big issue....

SO I just heard about both Walmart's Family Mobile plan on T-Mobile's network ($70 / month with my iPhones (on Edge I know)) and Virgin Mobile's release of the Intercept ($50 / month plus the cost of the phones).

My questions are, how locked down will Virgin Mobile have the Intercept? How will the Android experience be compared to the iPhones we've been using? How bad will Edge be on the iPhone?

Before you get too enamored with the low cost plan, just make sure the carrier you pick has the coverage where you need it - where you live, work, travel and play. Any plan is too expensive if you don't have the coverage you need. And T-Mo does not have as good a network as Verizon and AT&T. Remember - you get what you pay for.
