Wireless internet access

Hi. I am looking for a phone which can attach to a computer via an ethernet cable and allow it to automatically obtain an IP and use the internet with no additional software.

Sorry, I sould have been more clear. I was referring to the computer using the phones internet connection.

What I am trying to do is provide internet connectivity for a network through a phone. I am essentially trying to get a temporary internet connection to the middle of nowhere. I dont have any wireline service for dialup, so I was hoping to do it with a phone.

This is going to vary a lot based on the carrier you choose. Verizon is pretty strict about this on their EV-DO network although if you are in the middle of nowhere, there's probably not EV-DO.

You can still do what you want to with the Palm Treo using PDA Net or Softick PPP. However, I think you have to hack your ROM to make this work on Sprint. If you haven't chosen a carrier yet, go to the carrier specific forums and search for "tethering". I am most familiar with Verizon since this is what I have. I know that they allow this with the BB 7130e for something like an additional $15 a month. Again, it will probably vary widely from one carrier to another.

If you opt for Verizon, check out the BlackBerry 7130. It has a much more phone-like appearance than earlier BlackBerries, and definitely does what you want. Verizon calls this "tethering", and the 7130 is one of the few phones where you can do this 'legally' (as was pointed out earlier, there are various hacks to make this work with other phones but you may well find your service cut off). Verizon charges an extra $15/month for tethering, in addition to your voice/data plan. I'd think you would definitely want one of their voice + unlimited data plans to make this cost-effective.
