Windows Vista Home Premium hangs at desktop but works fine in safe mode with networking?

Sometimes it hangs in a black screen with just the cursor. I'm using avast! Internet Security, Registry Cleaner and SpeedupMyPC from Uniblue to ensure that my laptop is protected and fast. This has been a lingering issue and my laptop has "mood-swings" sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. For the past week it hasn't worked at all unless i go into any type of safe mode. I have tried using Startup repair and there were no errors found. I also tried using System Restore and it still doesn't help. It also takes such a long time to boot.
