Windows Media Player won't run or open?

The Story:
My laptop (windows XP) was running WMP 11 fine, but the computer had a lot of viruses. I recently installed ESET Nod32 Antivirus 4, and it was able to catch the viruses my other programs like McAfee (piece of junk) couldn't.

The Problem:
HOWEVER, afterwards I was unable to play any of my music or movie files. i cannot open WMP, through the shortcut icon, the program files icon, by double clicking a media file, or by right clicking media files and adding them to the WMP playlist. It doesn't even give an error message, it just doesn't open.

What I tried:
I have tried reinstalling WMP, downgrading to WMP 9 (when I try opening this, it says there is an error, but doesn't say what kind of error. I also cannot install WMP 10 for some reason), uninstalling ESET Nod 32, using \WINDOWS\system32 to run it, opening it in the program files directory, checking if its running in the background w/ Cntrl/Alt/Del, and restarting my computer numerous times. Nothing works.

Final notes:
I can only speculate that Nod32 accidentally deleted something important, but that doesn't explain why the reinstall wouldn't have fixed that. Also, every other program, including Itunes and VLC media player, are working fine. Please help me fix this, I am really desperate.

Thanks for your time.

i have had this many times

this happens because of your firewall is blocking a file.

you can run WMP by right clicking and clicking run as admin, this will allow the entire program to bypass the firewall
