windows media player,, i can hear the film but cant see it!!?

im on windows media player and i had a f few films transfered onto my laptop by a friend, i am really bad at this kinda thing n dont know how 2 watch it. i opened the file in "my documents" and it opened in media player. i can hear the film, but it is only showing those swirly visulisations on the screen.... how do i get the video to play so i can see the picture and hear the sound....?

Download and install the lasest CODEC(s) for your player. You may do this from the microsoft windows site. First you should should update the player to version 10 or better yet version 11.
