windows media player Codec thing????????????

ive recently downloaded a movie from the Internet, and when i click on it the message when it opens says, "Windows media player cannot play this file, The player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

what am i to do?
i have vista
 
what OS are you on , if win7 you can download windows 7 codec pack 2.2.0 or just use VLC Media player as its better anyway
