Windows Media Player 11 doesn't find my portable device. Why?

This is Windows XP Pro with SP 3 and Media Player 11. The portable device is a Dell Axim x51v connected via a USB cable. ActiveSync recognizes the device, and Windows Explorer can view and move data to/from the device and its SD card. Microsoft has a solution (sort of) recommending uninstalling the device from Device Manager / Portable devices, but my device isn't there to uninstall. Unplugging and replugging doesn't help. Media Player 9 was able to recognize the device just fine (not sure about MP 10). I've seen other posts asking a nearly identical question as mine, but with no workable solutions (at least for me). This says that many are apparently experiencing this problem with MP 11.
Any ideas????
