Window media player????????

I have window xp (home edition) and i use firefox browser.I recently restored factory setting and ever since i am having problem with window media player,i tried different versions 9,10 and 11, but none of them worked for me.Am i doing something wrong? Please help
 
go to filehippo.com and type codec in the search

download either vista or klite codec pack. (vista codecs work on xp)

run windows updates custom, then run windows updates express until no more updates available.

the custom updates may look at your dvd rom, so run it.
