Will Verizon require me to get a data plan if I switch phones?

I have the Alias 2 right now and i dropped in the the urinal. In the end... it no longer works. My friend has offered me one of her phones. Now I know if you go to a smart phone or one of the more advanced touch screen phones they make you get the data plan. But if i switch to a phone like the samsung intensity, which is one of their older phones, will they still make me get the $10 data plan? I need to know cause im getting the phone tomorrow and my parents wont let me activate it if it raises the cell phone bill. Thanks guys
