...bills? I will be flying through Heathrow Airport this weekend. I have old Pounds from the 70's and 80's that my grandfather had and never used. I've read online that these are not common legal tender anymore, but that the Bank of England in London guarantees to exchange them for new ones. The BoE also said that commercial banks may, but are not required to. Since I'll just be passing through Heathrow and continuing to the continent, I would really like to exchange the bills during my layover in Terminal 5 at Thomas Cook, rather than months later when I may be in London. Thanks!

Since Thomas Cook is not a bank. They have no obligation to accept them. I very much doubt that the banks will accept them even if have an account with them.

All I can suggest is that you go to the BoE and get exchanged there. As the signed promise says that it will pay the bearer on demand the sum of x pounds.
