the traded JJ hickson for Casspi and a future #1 pick

are they dumb or brilliant for doing this? they will still be a terrible team next year, but with Kyrie Irving developing and another #1 pick from a stronger draft next year could give the cavs a huge boost in 3 to 4 years

I can't imagine that they drafted PG Kyrie Irving #1 overall this year if their plan all along was to try and draft Austin Rivers when he enters the draft.

I think they wanted to trade Hickson because he's going into the last year of his contract and now the Cavs are leery of players leaving at the end of contracts and getting no players in return. Getting Caspi (a decent player with 2 years remaining) and a first round pick guarantees the Cavs something in return for Hickson leaving I guess.

I don't live in Cleveland so I don't follow every detail of the Cavs, but I'd be willing to bet the reason they shopped Hickson so hard was that they offered him a contract extension at some point this year (probably behind closed doors) and he declined it so they thought he'd leave when his current contract expires. Just a guess.

They only wanted the 1st round pick. Casspi was just someone who they had to take.

Maybe draft Rivers because they have a good defensive frontcourt, depending on how Tristan Thompson plays. Then Irving and Rivers next year would be amazing the next thing to do is use there pick on a SF or another Big.

Nah they aren't.
Yes that trade is stupid.
But they couldn't get LeBron a good supporting cast and make him stay in Cleveland so they have a history of dumb trades
