Will Sprint activate a BlackBerry I OWN already, without requiring a contract?

Verizon does this. Does SPRINT?
Well, the only reason i ask is because I went into a sprint store and they said you still had to sign a contract. Even with my own phone. I just didnt know if he was lying to get a sale. But if a store wont activate it, Im not sure who to call.
