Will Smith Wants to be 1st black bond

James Bond is a white British male.

If you change this it won't be Bond any more.

Character races being altered in the name of political correctness is a joke. No one would stand for it for a moment (and rightly so) if it were black characters being turned white.
 
I'm not particularly a Bond fan but for me in terms of any role it depenRAB on whether or not the race of a given character is integral to that character. Obviously there are degrees but I don't think that simply Fleming writing him as white makes being white integral.

However, his Britishness is integral and unless Will Smith can do a bang on accent I would say that this has to remain Smith's fantasy because an American Bond would be a travesty!
 
Will Smith isn't right for playing James Bond. He is American and isn't suitable for the role. I rate him as a good actor, but not a great one.
 
I wouldn't be so against an American playing Bond if they could do a passable British accent and were a good actor.

But James Bond is white. Why does this need to be altered?

Have to agree with an earlier poster: Bond should be played by a white man otherwise we might as well have Ice Cube from XXX2!!!:p
 
Bond had dark hair. Why was that altered? Many things have changed about Bond from the books. His skin colour would be just another one.

Saying that, I don't think Will Smith is right for the role. He still has too much of a baby face for me. He doesn't look wordly enough.

Idris Elba would be a great Bond.
 
Somebody should take that nice Will Smith aside, put a comforting arm around his shoulder and say this:

"Look Will, this idea you have isn't gonna work, Bond is, you know, a white guy, from England, and well, you aren't, sorry"
 
If James Bond isn't white and British it might as well just be any other generic Hollywood spy movie. What would be the point?

Bond is iconic as a white man. Changing hair colour is one thing (which happens all the time on the big and small screen). Changing race is quite another.
 
Why stop here? Why not have Bond be an American, black, lesbian female?

They coulod give the part to Halle Berry, seeing as she was so well liked in Die Another Day ;)
 
Why? It's entirely plausible for a black man to have the same cultured upbringing as Bond, and go on and be as effective an agent. Why does his race matter so much? He is British, I agree, but that doesn't mean he can't be black.

What would an American Bond be called....

...I know how about Jason Bourne.

Bond is a British insitution - having an American playing Bond will spoil it and will then only be a matter of time before Bond becomes an American CIA agent.
 
I've got nothing against Will Smith, but while we're at it why don't we have a female James Bond?

The point is, why can't someone write a similar type of character specifically for Will Smith, that way it doesn't have to be Bond and doesn't have to destroy it's heritage.

Personally I think Bond had it's day donkey's years ago and should be dropped now.
