about renewable energy? http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090106/ts_nm/us_russia_ukraine_gas

It now looks like its not just the Ukraine that is being hit, as Russia has decided to halt all gas supplies via Ukraine to Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece and Macedonia. Something it said it wouldn't be doing over the weekend.

Holding whole countries to ransom over the winter months when gas is most in demand, must surely make the EU think again about reducing its reliance on Russia and making there own alternative forms of power. Necessity is the mother of invention as they say. If we won't put the money into research and infrastructure because of the credit crunch, maybe we will because of political necessity?

Hello,

(ANS) The answer here is almost overwhelmingly YES!, many countries in the EU are already sick & tired of the political lies & cheating & cat & mouse games over gas that the Russians & Mr. Putin (and Mr.Medverdev ) are playing. Access to Gas is 100% being used as a political weapon, the fact that other EU countries are indirectly affected is not helpful.

**NOTICE: though that most of the countries affected by the Russian Gas crisis are ex-soviet states i.e. Ukraine, Poland, Byelor Russ, etc. This implies some sort of political control is trying to be exerted by Putin over these states.

**The UK only gets about 2-3% of its Gas from Russia and we in the UK could easily turn to Norway & Scandinavia for extra gas & oil if push came to shove. This has already been talked about i.e. reducing our dependence on Russia & OPEC,etc.

If Ukraine has to choose between russian gas and hydrogen from its coal then its coal is better else it risks to be without heating in January...
EU is wrong, reasons:
Germany and Poland are importing a lot of russian gas without considering hydrogen production from cheap wind or their own coal. Infact german government is consiring a gas pipeline across the Baltic sea to directly have russian gas in Germany.
Other countries are producing great quantities of their own electricity from russian natural gas (Around 60% of italian electricity comes from imported, primarily algerian and russian..., natural gas).
