Will riding a bike two miles three times a week make you lose weight?

Nope. Riding a bike is good for 40 calories per mile. If you rode two miles, three times a week, that's 240 calories a week.

You need to burn 3500 calories to burn a pound. That's 14 weeks at your rate.

So, every 3.5 months, he would lose a pound. Not very fast, is it?

riding the bike will help lose weight. as far as the knee pain goes. it's going to depend on how hard it is to pedal the bike too.if the bike has gears then he should choose one that is about as hard to pedal as the resistance would be if he was walking. too much resistance can wreck the knees.
my quess would be that he will have rear end problems after his first ride.
i ride alot when it starts to warm up after wintertime. the first few rides are the worst because of soreness. usually rear end ,knees and lower back. if he has problems just tell him to take a pain medication like Aleve and even ride when he is sore. usually after a few minutes to warm up the pain and stiffness aren't really noticeable.
maybe you already know all this because you ride a bike but i just thought i would mention it just in case.

Not by itself. First, your boyfriend should avoid running and any exercises that slam the knee joint. Swimming is an excellent way to lose weight and is enjoyable. The Y in your community probably has a pool and the rates for joining are not that outrageous. Take advantage of it this summer. Plus the weights and instructions from the fitness employees. Diet plays just as an important part in weight loss as cardio. NO night snacks except non fat yogurt or fruit. Cut meal portions in half. No breads, gravies, chips, candies. REplace old eating habits with good ones.

My boyfriend has knee problems from growing too fast. He's six five and over 300 pounds. Would losing weight help his knee pain and would riding a bike with me for a few miles a few mornings a week take some weight off?
