Two boxes (4kg and 2kg) lie side by side on a frictionless surface. A horizontal force of 48N is applied to both boxes.

a) Find the acceleration of both boxes (I got it...0.80m/s2)
b) find the force the 4kg box applies on the 2kg box.
 
You haven't stated which box the force is applied to.

If they both have the same acceleration, then the 48 N must act on the combined mass: a = F/m = 48/6 = 8.0 m/s².

If the force is applied to the 4 kg box, then it must push on the 2 kg box with a force F2 = m2*a = 2*8 = 16 N.

If the force is applied to the 2 kg mass, F4 = m4*a = 4*8 = 32 N
