ok so im a sophomore and im pretty worried because i want to get into a good college like columbia but problem is i failed some classes this year but they include french (which i cant retake) ethics (which is a regents elective class) and chemistry (which i dont need because i already have 2 science regents credits) but theyre still failing grades on my transcript. so im wondering if a school like columbia will really look at things like failing grades or do they just care about extracurricular activities, AP and honor class, and the SATs ???

Well colleges mostly look at extracurricular activies and whether you're an overall good kid, and your gpa and if you take honors classes as well as your act or sat scores. So yes and no. They will definitly take your bad grades into consideration but if you do good next year and your senior year, play a sport and some community service, pull your gpa to 3.3 or higher as well as getting a pretty good score on the sat you'll be fine. Plus your junior year is the most important so as long as you dont fail anything next year, plus they like when you improve, it shows you are willing to work hard.

By failing some classes that will effect your GPA which is something they will definately look at. But your still young, a sophmore so you should seriously buckle down and get all your grades up && hope for an interview from your college so that if they bring up those grades you can explain why you got those grades, make it a good but believable story. Keep your grades up!!
good luck hun

The grades will affect your overall GPA. It really depends on which school(s) to which you apply. I hate to say it, but in this day and age, it may also depend a great deal on whether your parents can pay your tuition and you don't need any financial aid from the school. I wouldn't count on any grants or scholarships. The college admissions people always say they take the whole person into consideration, but I think that's pretty much the standard line.

All you can do is try. If you don't get in the first time, then attend somewhere else and try again. Might want to try a local state college for a year and if you can show this was a glitch in your high school career and you can perform well at the college level, they may give you consideration.
