Will my Canon 500D work with a Nikon Speedlight SB-24 FLash?

My dad just bought me a Canon 500d But i really want a flash... he gave me his old camera with a NikonFlash.... Speedlight Sb-24

It may work very well in the manual mode, but since the contacts on the hot shoes of Canon and Nikon are different, it will not have all the automatic feature it would had you purchased a Nikon D60 or D5000.

The SB-24 is still one of the older flash units that still work with the newest Nikon DSLR's
