Will I have to pay the extra $30 for a Motorola Q?

My phone broke and my friend has a Verizon Motorola Q he said he is willing to give me for free. The reason I cannot just go and buy a new phone is because my parents don't want the extra $30 (or $10) a month on our bill for the "data plan". With older flip phones, I am able to dial *228 and it transfers the information on to the new phone. Will that work with the Motorola Q or will I have to pay the extra $30 to activate that phone as well? It came out before the data plans started, however, it's like a blackberry and uses internet, although I will not be using the internet.

Call verizon and tell them to put a block on the data for the device.
I didn't have data on my moto q9m for a while. I opted to have it put on.
Blackberries push information while the q pulls it so you can get it blocked.
