I'm AD Air Force Security Forces. Last year, in December, during an operation, I tore my medial meniscus.
I'm stationed at a GSU in the Netherlands so all we have is two IDMT's. I had to get my knee surgery on the Dutch economy. I had the surgery in March of this year, but the surgeon said since it looked like it was healing on its own, he would let it be and just take out some scar tissue. I was on a medical profile for a month after that. The profile, however, doesn't really affect me as I am a controller/alarm monitor.
After my profile ended, my knee was still giving me problems but for most of the year, I've been trying to tough it out, but basically, my knee never healed.
I'm back on a profile right now and had an appointment with my surgeon last week. He said that it can go one of three ways after my MRI results come back:
-The injury has shifted allowing him access to repair it.
-The injury hasn't shifted and to repair it, he would have to remove what he called my knee's "shock asorber."
-If the injury hasn't shifted, let it be so as to allow me the ability to run/jump in the future.
If it is one of the two latter options, then I'm pretty sure I would be on a profile permanently which brings me here.
Would I be correct in assuming I would be MEBed?
If so, when would that happen (would they realize right away that my profile would be a while andt put me up in front of the MEB or would they wait for what I was told was the standard 12 months)?
Would cross-training be an option?
If I was discharged for this injury, would I still get my GI Bill and would it be Honorable?
What about disability pay?
Would that knee be covered for life?
I can't ask the IDMT's here as they are med techs and my questions are more of a regulation/personnel nature.
If this helps with any of the answers:
I've been in 3 and a half years.
Currently a Senior Airman but put on Staff in July or August.
Have had no paperwork in my career.
My DOS and DEROS are over two years out (May 2013).
I've tried searching all over the internet, but it's hard to find answers to specific questions. I just keep coming upon general info.
Sorry this is so long. Just wanted to make sure I've included every detail to get some ideas of what could be happening. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
