Will I ever be able to let a husky off-leash (during a walk/hike)?

It depends on the dog and the bond it has with the owner. Some huskies are fine off leash as long as you train them recall and they get enough exercise. Others are different but I'm sure if you where to spend alot of time with the dog and train it and exercise and work it it will probably come back to you. As long as your hiking in a safe area because they do have a high prey drive and may go off after a squirrel.
Maybe consider a different dog, maybe a husky shepherd cross. Try the shelter as they know the dogs and will tell you if the dog your adopting is likely to run away the minute you let it off leash.
The bottom line is it depends on the dog and how much time you spend with it.
 
Everywhere I read it says if you let a siberian husky off lead it's like basically setting it free and it will never come back. Is there anything I can do to not do that? Every other dog I own I can trust off lead because it always comes back. I'd like to be able to do this with a husky, but truthfully, I don't want to buy a companion that will just run away.
 
My dog went off her leash yesterday for the first time in 7 years- shes seven years old. It's all a matter of trust and getting to know you dog. She's a jack russell terrier and easily distracted and used to run off to other dogs. every dog can be trained to walk by your side if you train it well on a leash.
 
Some Huskies have been trained to advanced levels in obedience, but they are few and far between. If you want to see your dog again, don't let it run free. Huskies are independent roamers, don't trust them without a physical boundary.
