Will having a gym membership start a credit history for me?

I pay about $32 a month for a gym membership...is that building credit at all or not?

I need to start building credit and i realized that maybe my gym payments would be the start...

but maybe not.

So is it building any credit or not?

-Thanks!!

The only time your gym membership dues show up on your credit report is when you default and not pay them and they end up in collections.

What you need is a credit card. Those payments are recorded on your credit report.

Only loans, payments towards revolving lines of credit (credit cards) and of course a mortgage shows up on your credit report as a positive entry as long as you make your payments in a timely manner.

Paying the cell phone bill, the gym membership the rent and the utilities does not get recorded on your credit report.

Did they take your s.s. # when you signed up? If so yes. Especially if you're paying monthly and have a contract.

Your gym membership would only go on your credit report if you didn't pay, they took you to court and got a judgment against you. You are not applying for a line of credit with them, so it does not go on your credit report.
